PROOF POINTS: Many Young Adults Choose Work Over College, Report Shows

Many were not surprised when there was a decline in college enrollment during the last two year of the Covid pandemic, but it was a surprise that after colleges resumed in-person learning in the fall of 2021 that enrollment numbers did not return to pre-pandemic levels. In fact, even fewer students showed up than during the worst months of the pandemic in the fall of 2020. This is especially true of low-income young adults who appear to be going to work instead of going to college, in part due to rising wages and the need to support their families through hard times. The big question is, “ Will some of the students we’ve lost in the last two years come back to college, and, if so, when?” Regardless of whether students choose work over college, JAKAPA can help students get career ready with a focus on soft skills development.
